The association alleged that these workers had not received their wages for the last 30 months and expressed hope that the PDP-BJP coalition would fulfil the promise made to the daily-rated workers.

Addressing a meeting here, association president Shiv Kumar Sharma said the daily wagers working in the PHE Department were facing discrimination for years, leading to frequent agitations. He said the successive governments had failed to address their concerns.

Sharma further claimed that the government was harassing the employees of the Public Health Engineering Department by not accepting their demands. “Despite various reminders, the authorities concerned have been ignoring the genuine demands of the employees,” he said.

“Most of the workers are without salaries for 30 months, which is shocking,” Sharma rued.

He said the future of thousands of daily-wagers was hanging in balance.

The association has been demanding release of pending wages for the workers, regularisation of daily-wagers/casual workers who have completed five years of service and time-bound promotion of permanent employees. They also want government to carry necessary repairs in the department buildings.

Meanwhile, a deputation led Sharma met the Executive Engineer, PHE (Rural) and apprised him of the problems being faced by the workers.

Pertinently, the criteria for regularisation of daily-rated workers is provided in the SRO-64 of 1994. The conditions for regularisation include that a worker should be a permanent resident of the state and possesses prescribed academic and technical qualification for the post against which he is required to be regularised.
