Kashmir-born US scientist plans to set up stem cell facility at SKIMS

Kashmir-born US scientist Dr Khalid Shah Thursday revealed that he was working out a plan to setup a ‘Stem Cell Facility’ at valley’s prime medical institute—SKIMS Soura  — to effective treat tumors and cancers.
Kashmir-born US scientist plans to set up stem cell facility at SKIMSDr Shah, who recently hogged headlines across the globe for discovering a way of turning stem cells into killing machines to fight brain cancer, said Kashmir had a dire need of such a center to treat thousands of cancer patients.
“I had a detailed discussion with SKIMS authorities and faculty members regarding the cancer treatment at the institute and plan to upgrade it using new technology and research. They were receptive and positive about setting up of the Stem Cell facility center at SKIMS,” Dr Shah told .
He said he will now have to prepare a detailed proposal covering each and every aspect of the facility including Good Manufacturing Practices.
Dr Shah, the Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, US today delivered lecture on “Stem Cell therapies for Cancer: From Bench to Bedside” at SKIMS auditorium, here.
He is a principal faculty at Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Boston and has have pioneered major developments in the stem cell therapy field, successfully developing experimental models to understand basic cancer biology and therapeutic stem cells for cancer.
His studies have been published in a number of reputed journals like Nature Neuroscience, PNAS, Nature Reviews Cancer, JNCI, Stem Cells and Lancet Oncology, validating the use of therapeutic stem cells alone and in combination with clinically approved drugs for cancer therapy.
Dr Shah holds positions on numerous councils, advisory and editorial boards in the fields of stem cell therapy and oncology.
His work recently caught the attention in the public domain and has also been highlighted in the media worldwide including features on BBC and CNN.
